Number of Times Married Question on the American Community Survey to be Retained
On June 14, 2013, the White House Office of Management and Budget, Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs announced that the “number of times married” question will be retained on the American Community Survey (ACS).
The announcement is posted at:
As you may recall, the Population Association of America
(PAA) and Association of Population Centers (APC) wrote to the OMB, encouraging the retention of this important question. If this question had been dropped from the ACS, it would have weakened the ability of family researchers to accurately portray, interpret, and follow long-term marriage trends in the United States and exacerbated the data gap left when the National Center for Health Statistics discontinued collecting marriage and divorce statistics from the states in 1996.
PAA and APC are pleased with the outcome of this decision and thank members who shared their thoughts with the OMB during the recent open comment period.
