On December 6, 2021, the Population Association of America (PAA), with support from the Association of Population Centers (APC), sponsored a virtual congressional briefing, “Braving the Storm: How Climate Change Will Affect How and Where We Live.” The briefing, which was moderated by Dr. Vida Maralani, Chair, PAA Government and Public Affairs Committee featured presentations by three prominent population scientists: Dr. Parfait Eloundou-Enyegue, Cornell University; Dr. Sara Curran, University of Washington; and Dr. Mathew Hauer, Florida State University.
The scientists shared findings reflecting on the international and domestic demographic and socioeconomic implications of climate change. Audience members, which included congressional staff, federal agency officials, organizational representatives, and PAA members, asked a variety of questions about not only the research that was presented, but also about what additional data and resources population scientists need to enhance research elucidating how climate change could potentially affect vulnerable individuals and communities.
