Science and Technology Fellowship Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

What

The Population Association of America is delighted to announce a new opportunity for PAA members: Participation in the prestigious Science and Technology Fellowship Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This fellowship provides an exciting opportunity for researchers to come to Washington, DC and use population science, outside of the academic setting, to inform public policy and work for one year in a federal agency.

The goals of the fellowship are: (1) to contribute to the effective use of scientific knowledge about population in the formation of public policy; (2) to educate the scientific community about the development of public policy; and (3) to establish a more effective liaison between population scientists and federal policymakers.

When

From September 1 to December 15, 2011, PAA will accept fellowship applications for the 2012-2013 term. The term will start on September 1, 2012 and end on August 31, 2013. The fellowship pays a competitive salary.

Who

This fellowship is open to doctoral scientists from any discipline relevant to population research. Both early and midcareer professionals are encouraged to apply.

How

The PAA fellow will be a member of the AAAS Science and Technology Fellowship Program, which includes fellows from a variety of scientific disciplines. Following a two-week science policy orientation program sponsored by AAAS, the PAA fellow will begin work as a resident scholar within an executive agency — e.g., the Census Bureau, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, or National Science Foundation; National Center for Health Statistics; Economics and Statistics Association, Commerce. AAAS offers a seminar series for all fellows as well as professional development and networking opportunities.
