On June 17th and 18th, 2022, the University of Utah’s Asia Center will host a conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, for scholars researching population, health and migration in contexts of Asia affected by armed conflict and organized violence. The purpose of this conference is to support, discuss, disseminate and elevate the profile of scholarship on armed conflict, population and health, and to demonstrate the significance of PHAC globally and especially within Asia. We welcome submissions with wide-ranging disciplinary foci and methodological approaches and from settings that span Asia, including East, Southeast, South, West and Central Asia, and the Pacific Islands. We envision and welcome submissions focused on armed conflict, organized violence and militarism as they shape (and are shaped by): migration and refugee mobility; fertility and reproductive health; population dynamics and structure; morbidity, mortality and aging. We also welcome submissions addressing stress exposure and early life adversity in contexts of war.
All conference attendees will give a 15-minute paper presentation in a session along with 3 to 4 other scholars. The organizers wish to encourage scholarly exchange and collaboration through meeting attendance and will allot generous time for discussion and brainstorming on research, grant writing and other collaborations. The conference organizers are pursuing arrangements with several peer-reviewed journal(s) to publish a special issue from the conference proceedings. Thus, all presenters will be requested to submit a complete, original paper that has not been published or accepted for publication elsewhere.
The PHAC in Asia conference is being supported by the University of Utah’s College of Social and Behavioral Science, Department of Sociology, Asia Center (a Title VI National Resource Center), and Confucius Institute. There is no registration fee, and conference sponsors will cover participants’ airfare (up to $500), ground transportation, meals during the conference, and two-three nights of accommodation. We also plan to arrange for a virtual/hybrid component for the conference so that scholars unable to travel may share their presentations via video conference technology.

In your submission, in addition to your extended abstract please provide us with the following information: Paper title and authorship, your institutional affiliation and title, a short bio (100 words or less), and 3-6 keywords for your research interests. Applications should be submitted no later than February 1, 2022. We will inform applicants of acceptance no later than February 28, 2022. Full paper submission deadline: May 31, 2022.
