We invite submissions for a workshop on ‘Digital Technologies and Sustainable Development’,
organized by the Digital Gender Gaps project, to be held at the University of Oxford, UK, on
September 30-October 1, 2024. The workshop will take place at Nuffield College in Oxford, UK, with a hybrid option available to join remotely. The conference aims to bring together
interdisciplinary perspectives on: (1) measuring and understanding inequalities in digital
adoption and behaviours, across technologies and platforms, using traditional and digital data sources; (2) causes and consequences of digital adoption for sustainable development and population inequalities; (3) applications of digital, geospatial data, machine learning and AI, for population and development measurement. We especially welcome submissions considering these questions in low and middle-income country (LMICs) contexts.
Call for Papers
Digital technologies have proliferated across the world and have become vital tools for
accessing social, economic, and health resources. The theoretical potential for technologies to empower marginalized populations, especially in LMICs, is embedded across the global
sustainable development goals (SDGs), such as SDG 5 on gender equality. To what extent is
this theoretical potential realised? How has digitalisation affected population inequalities? How is the adoption of digital technologies and behaviours socio-demographically stratified?
Digitalisation has also created new sources of data for social and population measurement.
How can new sources of data, generated through the use of digital technologies, help us
analyse global population and development processes? We welcome submissions on topics
including, but not limited to, the following areas:
- Methods and data innovations for measuring and quantifying digital inequalities across low-, middle- and high-income countries
- Assessing impacts of digital technologies on social, demographic, or economic outcomes
- Applications of big data, machine learning and AI for tracking population and development outcomes
- The relationship between online and offline inequalities and phenomena
To apply, please use this google form. We look forward to reading your submissions!
- Requirements for submission: title, short abstract, and optional extended abstract / full paper
- Submission deadline: June 15, 2024
Note: The workshop has no fees for participation, and meals will be provided during the event. Participants are expected to cover travel costs. However, we may be able to provide limited support for accommodation upon request and for early career researchers, we may be able to provide limited travel support, pending approval of funding.
