The COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating the challenge of conducting an inclusive, accurate, and efficient 2020 Census. The Census Bureau’s efforts to protect field staff forced them to temporarily suspend field operations and close local census offices. Further, the pandemic has compelled the Administration to send Congress an unprecedented request to push back the delivery of apportionment counts and redistricting data—from this December to almost mid-2021. Such an extension would have numerous fiscal and operational consequences, and present new challenges for conducting an accurate 2020 Census and delivering timely, high quality decennial census data. Join us for an update on the status of the 2020 Census and how the proposed extended schedule could affect the count of populations like college students and American Indians, especially those living on rural, remote tribal lands.
