Save the 2020 Census: Time to make noise!

By PAA Web posted 08-28-2020 00:00

Census ImageThank you to those of you who responded to our recent action alerts, urging Congress, specifically members of the U.S. Senate, to include language in the next COVID relief package that would extend the 2020 Census statutory reporting deadlines and not allow the Census Bureau to rush completion of the 2020 Census!

As of Aug. 28, negotiations over the next COVID relief package are on hold, and the Administration remains determined to stick to a revised 2020 Census operational plan that could potentially miss counting millions of U.S. households and result in the delivery of flawed apportionment data. Thus, it is imperative that census stakeholders make some noise and communicate their concerns to members of Congress NOW.

1. Contact your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative via Twitter using #SavetheCensus or #DontRushtheCensus (see sample tweet below)

#SavetheCensus, @(Twitter handle of US Senator or Representative)! Support language in next COVID relief package to extend the 2020 Census. Over 900 national, state, & local groups, including @PopAssocAmerica, urge Congress to act now. Almost 90 national business orgs say the same. https://bit.ly/32vMSsO or https://bit.ly/2D3NpJG

Here are the Twitter handles for Senators and Representatives. (PDFs)

2. Respond to the PAA action alert if you have NOT done so already.

Time is of the essence if the Census Bureau is to reverse course and pursue its original pandemic-adjusted operational plan and data delivery schedule.
