Benefits of Membership

Why Join?

Founded in 1931, PAA membership has increased from 1,300 in 1965 to nearly 3,000 today, reflecting the growing interest in the population field. By becoming a PAA member, you receive critical benefits that boost your career and support the population research community.

Demographers and population research scientists who are PAA members have access to the following benefits:

Publications

PAA publications keep members informed about important issues in the scientific study of the population. Our flagship journal is Demography, a bi-monthly scientific journal which includes research conducted in several disciplines including the social sciences, geography, history, biology, statistics, business, epidemiology and public health.

Members receive a weekly e-newsletter to update you on all the activities of the Association, events of professional interest, and employment and funding opportunities. Membership keeps you tuned in to the PAA Affairs blog for news and the calendar of events.

Annual Meeting

The PAA Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for the presentation of scientific papers to a peer audience. Other activities include workshops, roundtable discussions, and an exhibition of population related publications, software, products and services. PAA members receive discounts on registration, exhibit space, hotel reservations and unique opportunities to present their work and publications.

Professional Growth

Members can be part of several educational and professional development opportunities throughout the year. We offer webinars, panel sessions, and networking events virtually. You can grow by providing mentorship to up-and-coming demographers, or find a mentor to help guide you through career challenges.

Engage with Other Members

PAA members have access to the online Directory of Members, a searchable database containing names, institutional affiliation and contact information. (Members have the option to be hidden from the directory.)

You will have access to the members-only online networking platform, PAA Engage, where you can ask questions, get feedback, and discuss hot topics with your peers in demography. Find future collaborators or a mentor.

Volunteer

Members are encouraged to become active in one of the PAA committees involved with the Annual Meeting, publications, membership, finance, awards, population statistics, international outreach or applied demography. There are various opportunities to help out your fellow demographers during the Annual Meeting and throughout the year.

Advocacy

The Government and Public Affairs team works hard to educate policymakers about population research outcomes and advocates for the federal agencies that support demographic research. See the recent wins for population research.

Careers

Find a job or recruit an open position in our top-notch Career Center. Sign up for alerts, post your resume, browse for new jobs daily. Members post their job announcement for free.

Growing Population Research

Your membership also helps grow the next diverse generation of population scholars. PAA participates in the NextGenPop undergrad program, and recently secured a grant to enhance DEI initiatives. Starting in 2023, PAA will host undergraduate from minority serving institutions local to the annual meeting site.  This day and half program will introduce undergraduates to the field, careers in demography, and how to get into and succeed in graduate school.

Constantly striving to move the field forward, in the midst of the pandemic, PAA recreated the annual meeting virtually in 2021, and completely hybrid in 2022. Working towards a more equitable and inclusive organization, a grant will be used to review PAA through a DEI lens. The leadership is always looking for new ways to further demography.
