Title: Son Preference and Demographic Transition
Publisher: APH Publishing Corporation
Year: 2020
Announcement: This book deals with child sex preference among parents, and its implications for fertility behavior. India’s total fertility rate (TFR), the average number of children a woman is expected to bear during her reproductive years, has fallen by 19% over the past decade. Twenty-two percent of women want more sons than daughters, but only 3% want more daughters than sons. This book presents data from the National Family Health Survey, the Census of India, and the National Sample Registration Services. It is clear that the sex ratio in the age group 0-6 has decreased at a faster pace than the overall sex ratio of the country after 1981. The decreasing sex ratio in this age group may have a cascading effect on population over a period of time, leading to diminished overall sex ratios in the country.
