Call for papers on impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on outcomes related to Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2 (ending poverty and hunger)
Poor diets and malnutrition are a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Similarly, through several different mechanisms, including its effects on food security and access to healthcare, poverty also contributes to the global burden of disease. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of ending poverty and hunger (SDGs 1 and 2) has therefore required policy and program actions in various sectors including the health sector. Disruptions to health and health systems also can have implications for poverty, food security and nutrition.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries had made substantial progress towards achieving SDGs 1 and 2. However, the pandemic has severely affected economies around the world as well as health systems and health outcomes. Modeling studies have suggested that the impact of the pandemic on food security, diets and nutrition will be profound, but primary research on the health and economic impacts of the pandemic remain scarce. In addition, although many countries have introduced programs such as cash transfers and food aid to alleviate the impacts of the pandemic, few studies have assessed the extent to which these efforts have succeeded in mitigating the pandemic’s impact on health and economic outcomes. Published by the University of California Press, Advances in Global Health, a journal focused on the linkages between health and SDGs, invites papers on the intersection between the pandemic and SDGs 1 and 2.
We invite manuscripts on primary research in the following areas that pertain to the COVID-19 pandemic in low- and middle-income countries
- Poverty and related economic outcomes, including effects of the pandemic on human capital
- Food security
- Dietary quality
- Nutrition outcomes (undernutrition, as well as overweight, obesity)
- Healthcare expenditures
- Interventions and policies to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on poverty, food security, diets and nutrition
Research submissions may include empirical studies that use cross-sectional or longitudinal data, program and policy evaluations using experimental or nonexperimental methods, and evidence syntheses. We especially encourage submissions by lead authors from low- and middle-income countries, but will also accept analyses that focus on the impact of actions in high income countries on policies, actions and outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. We also welcome commentaries that are grounded in empirical evidence from low- and middle-income countries.
