As you may know, Congress is in the early stages of negotiating the 12 appropriations bills that will fund all Federal agencies in Fiscal Year (FY) 2025. Rank and file members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate are currently identifying and communicating their funding priorities to the Appropriations Subcommittees in both chambers.

The Dear Colleague letter is an important tool that members of Congress use to garner widespread support and deliver a united spending request on behalf of a Federal agency or program.  The House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees that have jurisdiction over specific agencies and programs receive these letters and use them to inform funding priorities within their bills. To have the greatest impact, these letters should have numerous, and ideally bipartisan, signers.

Currently, there are Dear Colleague letters circulating in the U.S. House of Representatives in support of funding agencies that directly and indirectly support the population sciences, including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, National Center for Health Statistics, and Census Bureau. Given how challenging the FY 2025 appropriations will be, PAA is urging its members to contact House offices and encourage them to sign these Dear Colleague letters. Most of these letters will close before May 3, so it is important to act now

Thank you for considering this opportunity to act on behalf of the Federal agencies that provide our field with essential funding and data.
