On June 10, 2024, the Population Association of America and Association of Population Centers participated in the 2024 Congressional Life Science Fair. The event, which is organized by the Coalition for Life Sciences and Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, showcases scientists from all over the country who share examples of their research in hands-on activities. Most of the participants are funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health.

PAA and APC sponsored a table featuring a project funded by the National Institute on Aging, the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). NHATS collects annual data from a nationally representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries ages 65 and older, and periodically from their caregivers, to measure the disablement process and its consequences.

Science Fair attendees participated in activities that the study uses to measure grip strength and balance. The NHATS team was represented by PAA member Dr. Jennifer Schrack, NHATS Principal Investigator, Johns Hopkins University, and her colleague, Ms. Maureen Skehan, NHATS Senior Research Associate, Johns Hopkins University.  Approximately 100 individuals from congressional offices and committees, including the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, as well as officials from the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of State, and National Science Foundation attended the event.
