On September 29, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched its new Implementing a Maternal Health and Pregnancy Outcomes Vision for

Everyone (IMPROVE) initiative by awarding approximately $7.2 million in grants through a Notice of Special Interest on Maternal Mortality. This initiative is supported by multiple NIH institutes and co-led by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the NIH Office of the Director (OD), and the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH).  Areas of research include leading causes of maternal deaths in the U.S., heart disease, hemorrhage or bleeding, and infection, as well as research on contributing conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, mental health disorders, and substance use disorders, and structural factors that may contribute to delays or disruptions in maternal care.
