Urge Congress to Include Non-Profits, Scientific Societies in COVID-19 Economic Stimulus

By PAA Web posted 03-19-2020 00:00

The COVID-19 crisis is having a profound impact on the daily lives of Americans, on every institution and business, and on the economy. For PAA, that has included the cancellation of PAA 2020 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC (scheduled for April 22-25)—a step that will have severe fiscal consequences for our organization.

Congress has been working at breakneck pace to develop and approve emergency legislation to provide resources to combat the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. As of this writing, the second COVID-19 measure has been approved by the Senate and has been sent to the President for his signature. Meanwhile, a third measure, aimed at providing economic relief to affected industries and individual Americans, is being negotiated. PAA is joining other associations in requesting that Congress provide relief to the scores of associations and scientific societies that have been forced to cancel large scale professional meetings—and may incur substantial financial losses. Take Action Now!

After past disasters, such as 9/11, Congress approved assistance for affected sectors—such as aviation and the hospitality industry—but not for non-profit organizations. Given the nature and projected duration of this crisis, however, we and other associations believe it is both appropriate and necessary to ensure the survival of organizations whose mission benefits the public good. PAA has sent a letter articulating this request to congressional leadership. Read the letter.

We are asking for your help in urging your Senators and U.S. Representative to include non-profit associations, including scientific societies, in the next COVID-19 economic stimulus package.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to help PAA!
