We are so pleased to announce that the first open-access issue of Demography has been published by our new partner, Duke University Press (DUP).
As an open-access journal, Demography is now available online for you – and everyone – to read. We encourage you to sign up for email alerts to receive information about new issues as they become available. Currently, the 2016-2020 volumes are also available on the same Duke website; the 1964-2015 volumes will be available later this spring. In the meantime, the 1964-2015 issues are available on JSTOR and our past publisher’s website.
Previously, Demography was part of a large collection published by a for-profit commercial publisher. By moving to a university press, PAA has ensured that the scholarship and research that we produce does not only benefit shareholders but instead stays within the scholarly communications ecosystem. No author or institution is required to pay fees for research to be published. If you have funding available for publication, you can help PAA offset its direct costs to publish the journal, which is completely optional.
Demography is now funded through a Community Partnership model, where funding is sought from libraries, library consortia, universities, funding bodies, and researchers to cover the cost of publishing the journal and to make the work openly and widely available. This funding is also sought to offset the revenue that was previously provided to PAA through article open-access fees, direct subscriptions, licensing revenue, and royalties paid from the commercial publisher. Duke University Press has been hard at work to secure this funding – you can view a list of those who have already committed to funding Demography. More details are forthcoming for those who are eager to encourage their institution’s libraries and others to support Demography.
This new partnership with Duke University Press has allowed PAA to take an important step in making the field’s top research available to anyone without any barriers – which is a key tenet of PAA’s strategic plan adopted in 2017. This will dramatically increase the impact of our community’s scholarship and is a bigger step than we could have possibly imagined just four years ago.
Support from PAA leadership, including the Board of Directors and the Committee on Publications, was critical to the execution of this new partnership. We would like to specifically recognize the leadership by Committee on Publications chairs Pamela Smock and Kelly Raley for their significant contributions to making this partnership a reality.
