Call for Papers
The Institute for Urban Policy Research and Analysis at the University of Texas at Austin will be organizing a Spring 2025 Symposium on Race and Policing in American Cities: Insights from Research, Policy, and Practice. The symposium will be held at the Thompson Conference Center in Austin on Thursday April 3, 2025. It will provide a forum for researchers, advocates, policy makers, and members of the public to examine the complex relationship between race and policing. A major objective of the symposium is to examine how research on these issues can inform policies on policing that improve the wellbeing of urban residents.
To accomplish this goal, the institute invites submissions of abstracts of research papers that examine various dimensions of the theme of the symposium. These include, but are not limited to, submissions that focus on (a) new evidence on the relationship between race and policing, (b) evaluations of the effectiveness of existing policies, (c) critical analyses of understudied aspects of the relationship between race and policing, and (d) assessments of the role of social activism in improving policing outcomes. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2024. Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be notified by December 15, 2024. Submissions from junior scholars (e.g., graduate students, postdocs, and untenured faculty) are encouraged. The institute will cover the costs of travel and accommodation for a limited number of junior scholars whose abstracts are accepted.
