Share your expertise to help shape the future of historical demography.

HistLab at the UiT the Arctic University of Norway is planning a new book, entitled “An Introduction to Sources and Methods in Historical Demography," which aims to explore the rich world of historical population databases and their hands-on implications for research and analysis. As the availability of these databases has grown, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive guide that addresses the concepts, sources, and methodologies specific to historical demography. This book will provide insights into the origins of key source materials from various global databases and delve into source criticism of pivotal demographic variables. Additionally, it will feature tutorials on basic analytical methods essential for studying historical populations, focusing on mortality, fertility, migration, and nuptiality.

Use this questionnaire to contribute your expertise to this important project in two ways: First, by answering some questions about your experience in teaching historical demography. Second, by indicating if and how you would like to contribute as one of the authors.

Based on the responses received, the table of contents (which you can access in the questionnaire) will be updated and potential contributors will be contacted by the end of June. The aim is to have a balanced mix of junior and senior authors.

Deadline to submit the form: May 11th, 2025.

Your participation will be invaluable in shaping a resource that guides students and scholars through the intricacies of historical demographic research. The goal is to reach as many people as possible, so feel free to forward this email to relevant colleagues.
