A Note From the New Editors of Demography

By PAA Web posted 08-07-2025 10:31 AM

Our term as the new coeditors of Demography, the flagship journal of the Population Association of America (PAA), began on July 1, 2025. We are honored by the trust the PAA has placed in us and are delighted that Demography will once again be hosted at Duke University—following in the footsteps of Ken Land, who served as editor from 2008 to 2010, and Phil Morgan, who coedited the journal with UNC’s Barbara Entwisle from 1999 to 2001.

The transfer of the Demography editorial office from the University of Washington to Duke University was smooth. We are deeply grateful to Sara Curran and her outstanding editorial assistants, María Vignau Loría and Aryaa Rajouria, who have generously shared their knowledge with us over the past several months. We are particularly pleased to announce that María will continue to serve as our editorial assistant. Her rich experience is vital to the daily operations of the journal and to shepherding manuscripts through the editorial process.

Many others also deserve our gratitude. Demography’s seasoned Managing Editor, John Thomas, is a pleasure to work with—for both authors and editors. We are also thankful to the PAA Publications Committee (Matt Hall, Jenny Trinitapoli, and Elizabeth Wrigley-Field) for advising us on a number of important editorial practices, the PAA Communications Director Betsy Alafoginis for working with us on contractual issues, and Liz Beasley and Jed Cohen at Duke University Press for their responsiveness and support with the ScholarOne manuscript submission system and management.

Over the past three editorial terms, Demography has received submissions at a robust rate of approximately two per day—a pace we aim to sustain with a timely and transparent review process that will be reflected in journal metrics currently in use and additional acceptance/speed metrics. We are also fortunate to rely on the generous efforts of our Deputy Editors and Editorial Board members, who are a diverse group of respected scholars from Duke and numerous institutions across the United States and around the world—including Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. These rosters are available on the Demography website under the Editorial Team menu.

Deputy Editors handle routine submissions as well as submissions from Duke authors, where conflicts of interest may arise. Editorial Board members contribute their expertise by providing regular, timely reviews of a limited number of manuscripts. The disciplinary diversity, perspectives, and knowledge of our Deputy Editors and Editorial Board members are invaluable as we continue Demography’s 60-year tradition of publishing rigorous research and welcoming submissions from demographers and population scientists from across the globe.
