PAA Comments on STrategies to enRich Inclusion and achieVe Equity (STRIVE) Initiative

10-05-2021 14:36

Throughout its history, NICHD has led efforts to optimize health for all and to foster an inclusive, diverse workforce. However, social factors are key drivers of health disparities, and unequal career opportunities persist.

NICHD launched STRIVE to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all aspects of its research and workforce.

Led by the Office of Health Equity, STRIVE aims to:

  • Reinforce EDI within NICHD’s workforce
  • Foster EDI in the broader scientific workforce and among trainees
  • Understand how to mitigate, through research, the root causes of health disparities that may result from structural racism and discrimination, and develop potential solutions to reduce or address these disparities

NICHD’s STRIVE complements broader NIH efforts to promote EDI in its workforce and among those who participate in and conduct its research. The NIH UNITE initiative seeks to further these goals while also working to eliminate structural racism.

Information Requested

Specifically, NICHD requests your feedback on the following:

  • What innovative or novel approaches to research could be leveraged to mitigate health disparities in NICHD populations?
  • What are the best opportunities to broaden community engagement in the research process?
  • What are some examples of community engagement models to strengthen health disparities research efforts (such as models for partnerships, collaboration)?
  • What resources (e.g., tools, technology, human capital) are needed to advance the field of health disparities research for NICHD populations?

The information stakeholders submit will inform the development of the STRIVE Action Plan that will complement the NICHD 2020 Strategic Plan to strengthen NICHD's health disparities research investments.

PAA and APC responded to the request for feedback which you can read below.
