Fireside Chat: Toxic Demography

Jennifer D. Sciubba and Michael S. Teitelbaum

For the first Washington Demographic Society (WDS) meeting of the year, we will feature Jennifer D. Sciubba and Michael S. Teitelbaum in a fireside chat on their new book, Toxic Demography (co-authored with Jay Winter), released in late November.

Toxic Demography examines how population change—fertility, aging, and migration—has become deeply entangled with political ideology and identity, as we see with census politics. In this conversation, the authors will discuss the motivations behind the book, the role of political demography in understanding contemporary debates, and how demographic narratives are shaped and mobilized in different contexts. They will also reflect on what this politicization means for researchers, policymakers, and the broader public.

The meeting will be Thursday, Jan 8, 2026, at 5:00 PM, at the offices of the Population Reference Bureau, suite 400; 1111 19th Street NW, Washington DC.

When:  Jan 8, 2026 from 05:00 PM to 06:00 PM (ET)
