PAA and APC Sign Leadership Conference SIPP Comment

09-26-2023 10:41

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights has authored a comment in response to the Census Bureau’s Federal Register Notice which requests review and approval of changes to the Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). These changes include reducing the SIPP sample size from 53,000 housing units to 35,000 housing units.

SIPP provides data that are used to estimate eligibility, use, future costs, and coverage for government programs such as food stamps, and to provide improved statistics on the distribution of income in the country. The Census Bureau’s proposal to implement a permanent 34 percent cut to the survey’s sample size would likely reduce data accuracy and decrease the reliability and usefulness of SIPP data.

PAA and APC signed this comment which urges the Census Bureau to reconsider its recommendation to reduce the SIPP sample size and instead identify adequate fiscal resources to preserve the future of this vital measure of household economic health and stability.
